Lately, I’ve been hearing a lot of comments these days.
Why is everyone saying things now like “That’s not dance” and “you can’t dance unless you can groove” or “that’s not hip hop”. I don’t understand why everyone is such a critic these days. I’ll be the first person to admit when I don’t know about a certain style or genre of dance, but I will also be the first person to ask about it so I can learn.
Dance is about self expression, which means NO ONE is wrong. There is no correct way to dance. There is no exact style for hip hop. I choreograph how I want to, and not to follow trends or rules or guidelines. There is no point in limiting myself. I am tired of people telling me that I’m not hip hop; I’m not contemporary; I’m not dancing.
I taught my first class at the Movement Lifestyle Studio tonight. The energy was AMAZING in my class. So many dancers pushing, not to beat each other, but rather to become a better version of themselves; They renewed my inspiration. They did not judge each other and were pushing so hard in class. I wish all dancers were like that. It’s sad when I see or hear other choreographers constantly putting others down who are going out on a limb to share a bit of themselves with the dance community. The dance community is too small for hate, so why put people down. Encouragement is the fastest way to grow, and I know that when everyone around me grows, it makes me want to get better as well. and I don’t know about you, but I want to get better so that I can be the best version of ME.
